Relationship

Healthy relationships involve honesty, trust, respect and open communication between partners and they take effort and compromise from both people. There is no imbalance of power. Partners respect each other’s independence, can make their own decisions without fear of retribution or retaliation, and share decisions. Social ties can instill a sense of responsibility and concern for others that then lead individuals to engage in behaviors that protect the health of others, as well as their own health. Social ties provide information and create norms that further influence health habits. Unhealthy behaviors can include resentment, codependency, passive aggression, lack of communication, disrespect, and substance abuse among others. An unhealthy relationship can cause these negative behaviors to increase, and partners may inadvertently reinforce their partner’s bad behavior.

Career and Economic Outlook OF
Behavioral Therapy

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasts that employment of mental health counselors and substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors should grow at a much-faster-than-average rate between 2019 and 2029, as more people have health insurance than in the past. Jobs for psychologists were also expected to increase at a faster-than-average pace, particularly in hospitals, mental-health facilities and agencies providing social services. Substance abuse, behavior disorder, and mental health counselors earned a median salary of $46,240, and clinical and counseling psychologists had a median salary of $78,200 in May 2019, per the BLS.

School and Career Counselor

By earning a master’s degree in school counseling or a similar field, these counselors then guide students toward success in school or help individuals choose educational programs and career goals. Most public school counselors need to be licensed, though requirements vary by state. The annual median salary, in general, was $57,040 in 2019, per the BLS, with those working for insurance carriers and the federal government earning the top wages. The BLS also predicted faster than average employment growth of 8% in this field from 2019-2029.

Rehabilitation Counselor

Rehabilitation counselors assist individuals who have physical or emotional disabilities, in their quests for independent living. These professionals are required to have a minimum of a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling or a similar field. A faster than average increase in jobs was projected by the BLS, with 10% growth expected from 2019 through 2029 versus 7% across all occupations. These counselors earned an annual median salary of $35,950 in 2020.

Family Behavioral Therapy

Family Behavior Therapy (FBT), which has demonstrated positive results in both adults and adolescents, is aimed at addressing not only substance use problems but other co-occurring problems as well, such as conduct disorders, child mistreatment, depression, family conflict, and unemployment. FBT combines behavioral contracting with contingency management. FBT involves the patient along with at least one significant other such as a cohabiting partner or a parent (in the case of adolescents). Therapists seek to engage families in applying the behavioral strategies taught in sessions and in acquiring new skills to improve the home environment. Patients are encouraged to develop behavioral goals for preventing substance use and HIV infection, which are anchored to a contingency management system. Substance-abusing parents are prompted to set goals related to effective parenting behaviors. During each session, the behavioral goals are reviewed, with rewards provided by significant others when goals are accomplished. Patients participate in treatment planning, choosing specific interventions from a menu of evidence-based treatment options. In a series of comparisons involving adolescents with and without conduct disorder, FBT was found to be more effective than supportive counseling.

Balance and Communication

Benefit 01: Support Metaphysical Behavioral Therapy provides a support network for people recovering from mental disorders. Since it is action-based, patients know they have someone to turn to as they work through their problem. Knowing that there is someone interested in them and their recovery allows patients to work toward changing negative behaviors.

Benefit 02: Raises Self-Esteem

For many people, low self-esteem is at the root of their disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy allows patients to build self-esteem by focusing on problems and working toward the solution. As patients find answers their belief in themselves grows and they are able to conquer the disorder.

Benefit 03: Creation of Positive Thought

With many mental disorders, negative thought patterns emerge and take over the life of the patient. Negative thinking becomes automatic with many patients. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy teaches patients how to turn negative thoughts into positive, realistic ones.

Benefit 04: Anger Management

Controlling one’s anger and learning to direct anger is a major issue with the mentally ill patient. Patients feel guilt and shame and these feelings turn into anger at the world. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy addresses the underlying issues that allow emotions to become overwhelming. It teaches patients various methods to help control emotional responses and to assist them in recognizing the reasons behind the anger.

Benefit 05: Better Communication Skills

Maintaining relationships is difficult when suffering from depression, addiction, and social anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps patients to learn how to communicate their feelings to others without becoming anger or feeling shame.

This is not to say that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provides instant success. It is short term and it requires hard work, but the benefits of it are worth it all.

cognitive-behavioral therapy

At Kramer & Montiel Psychology, we primarily use a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, as the efficacy of CBT is supported by extensive research. CBT is typically a short-term process in which the therapist takes an instructional and active role to help the client achieve specific goals. The basic premise of CBT is to help individuals understand that their perceptions strongly influence how they feel and behave. Although CBT is strongly rooted in science, building trust and rapport with each client is an essential part of our treatment process. When individuals begin to understand the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, they feel empowered to improve their mood and level of productivity. During the sessions, clients are taught the skills to identify and change distorted or unrealistic thoughts. Their work often continues outside of the sessions, as they are encouraged to make changes in their thinking and behavior in their daily lives. This process helps our clients become actively involved in their own treatment, so they can continue to use these tools long after treatment ends.
