Behavioral therapy is an umbrella term for types of therapy that treat mental health disorders. This form of therapy looks to identify and help change potentially self-destructive or unhealthy behaviors. It’s based on the idea that all behaviors are learned and that behaviors can be changed. Behavior Therapy refers to a range of treatments and techniques which are used to change an individual’s maladaptive responses to specific situations. Altering the maladaptive responses can often alleviate psychological distress and psychiatric problems.

Psych Evaluation

A psychological evaluation may be sought for a variety of reasons, such as to determine the mental state of cognition, and diagnosis; by at times using assessments, physical exams, and lab tests.

THERAPY

We primarily use a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, as the efficacy of CBT is supported by extensive research. CBT is typically a short-term process in which the therapist takes an instructional and active role to help the client achieve specific goals.

Most master’s programs for mental health include practicums and internships. In addition, clinical therapists spend many hours practicing under the supervision of a licensed therapist. This is necessary to meet state requirements for licensure and practice. Although each state’s requirements may vary, they are often quite similar. For example, most states require marriage and family therapists practice under the supervision of a licensed therapist for two years. Most states also require mental health therapists to practice under the supervision of a licensed therapist for 3,000 hours.
